Florence

A visit to Tuscany’s capital is a dream come true for any lover of history and art. Just under an hour and a half by car from Montigiano, Florence is within easy reach of Villa Gorgona. The sheer number of breathtaking landmarks and priceless works of art housed in its museums is astounding – and a stroll through the city’s streets is a true feast for the eyes.

It’s impossible to cover all the must-sees in just a few words, but certain sights are sure to impress every visitor. One of them is the stunning Ponte Vecchio, the city’s oldest and most iconic bridge, which spans the Arno River. It is known as the Bridge of Goldsmiths and  Jewelers due to the number of such shops built into the structure itself.

Another essential stop is Piazza del Duomo, home to Florence’s most famous architectural masterpiece – the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Il Duomo). Its majestic dome rises above a façade clad in three types of marble: white from Carrara, pink from Maremma, and green from Prato. A trip to Florence also offers the chance to see Michelangelo’s world-renowned statue of David. The original stands under a glass dome in the Galleria dell’Accademia, safely protected from the elements – and from pigeons. And no art lover should miss the Uffizi Gallery, the city’s most famous museum, boasting an extraordinary collection of Italian and Flemish masterpieces, various tapestries, and ancient sculptures.
